Cityscape Wall Mural

A bright, bold painting of Foxborough Primary School and its environs. Historical and architectural landmarks are easily identified and many of the young artists spotted the flats where they live.

Touted as a reward for well-behaved pupils, the project encouraged good behaviour and transformed Foxborough’s reception area.

Once a week five lucky Year 4s were asked to don a bin bag and paint directly onto the school wall.

Rule #1: Always ensure your spirit level matches your jumper and no one will doubt your artistic credentials.

Rule #2: Clearly dividing up the space with masking tape restricted the more ‘spirited’ artists from giving a liberal coat of paint to everything in sight.

Rule #3: Small brushes meant the artists could take time and care over their painting. As each section requires at least two coats of paint, the whole class can be involved across a number of sessions.

Rule #4: Adding windows with hand-drawn people looking out of them meant every artist could enjoy seeing their individual contributions come to life as part of a large collaboration. It was also useful practice at drawing on a very small scale.

School mural painted by artist in residence
The finished mural in all its colourful glory – the perfect showcase for the talented Year 4s.

Relatable art: Windsor Castle, the River Thames and the local industrial estate are easily identifiable and several of the young artists spotted their homes in the tall blue buildings on the right.
