Got a spare eggbox and a powerful grown-up to do the cutting for you? Why not try making your own animal head?

You’ll need:

  • An eggbox
  • Scissors (and a grown-up to wield them)
  • Glue (glue dots or a glue gun work best but try a glue stick or gloopy glue)
  • Pencil
  • Pen
  • Paints
  • Paintbrush
  • Cup of water to rinse your brush
  • Black pen for eyes and facial features
  • Cardboard
  • Coloured paper (I always hang on to birthday card envelopes as they’re often brightly coloured)

Directions:

Eggboxes from different shops tend to be different inside. Hopefully the one you use will have sticking up parts that separates the eggs. These can be handy to make an animal with a long nose like my mouse.

Alternatively, turn the box over and use the bit the egg sits in as the whole animal head (like in the photos of the rabbit, bear and monkey below).

The photos below could be useful if you want to cut specific ear shapes out of your eggbox. You don’t have to worry about these details though. It’s more important to enjoy the project than to make a perfect animal.

I painted my mouse head before I stuck it to the background. This kept the green background paper free of paint splats and smudgy fingerprints.

You can leave your animal head (and its ears if you’ve cut them out separately) to dry while you make your background. You might want to wash your hands if they’re covered in paint.

To make the background, plain white paper or card is fine. If you have leftover coloured paper or card you can use that. Make sure it is large enough for your animal head with space underneath for the body. I stuck my green paper to a piece of cereal box to make it rigid.

You can choose to draw the animal body onto your background or use different coloured paper or newspaper. I cut a sort of tall rainbow shape out of an old yellow envelope for the chest. I used a small piece of white paper cut into tiny triangles to make a collar. You can add buttons, pockets, a bow tie and other detail

If you’ve got any energy left why not frame your masterpiece? Thin strips of old wrapping paper, coloured paper or even newspaper will work well, anything that is a different colour to your background. Daisy and Ivy drew their own borders just by adding a lovely pattern. I used washi tape. You could try little stickers, buttons or small pieces of pasta.

I’d LOVE to see your work. If you feel like sharing it please ask your grown-up to send a photo to me at SweetingsGreetings@gmail.com or tag me or DM me on Instagram @sweetingsgreetings
